That part of the airport was all messed up from renovations and extra security. The benches sat at odd angles, and you tripped on wrinkled-up carpet.The English couple behind us - I guess they were in their late 30s - I don't think they really spoke much until you walked out to the bathroom. They seemed pretty morose.
She was chewing. Her mouth was half full when she said, "Do you want a Chee-tow?"
He just grunted "no."
"Do you hate them?"
"I do, rather."
"Do you hate me?"

This reminds me of all the weird/highly personal things I’ve overheard in airport lounges–must be pretty common with the advent of cell phones, but one time I was sitting next to a woman who was on her cell phone receiving what must have been very unexpected and terrible news. She broke down sobbing, just completely grief-stricken weeping. I don’t actually know what happened since I tried to immediately give her some space, but it was an awful sight to witness. Very close to that trip I heard a man in his late thirties or forties talking on his cell phone about having just met his birth mother for the first time.
